Garry's Famous Oatmeal

Picture this, it’s a cold winter morning, you're craving a quick and easy soul warming bowl of wholesome deliciousness. This recipe is my ultimate a.m. comfort food and I am excited to share it with you! Not only is it an absolute flavour bomb, it also gifts a wide range of health benefits that can help you escape those overwhelming feelings of burnout, emotional imbalance and physical tiredness. From eye health to gut health, from immunity to energy, this brekkie has got it all.

For this recipe the only essentials are Rolled Oats, Milk (I like Oat Milk for this one), Water and some of Erbista's Garry Gubinge powder. Pretty much everything else is  optional but I have included them in this recipe as well as my preferred method to achieve a great consistency. Feel free to experiment with toppings, dried fruit, chia seeds or whatever yummy things you have handy.

I think a small handful of walnuts finely chopped, ground or crushed is an absolute winner in terms of texture. I love that soft biscuity bite especially with the compliment of Maple Syrup or Honey. Also, don’t underestimate the amazing nutritional value of walnuts as they contain a lot of healthy fats, reduce blood pressure and are good for your cardiovascular health.

I like to start by lightly toasting my oats in a tiny bit of oil over the stove in a small non-stick pot for about 2 minutes. This allows the oats to hold their shape and texture throughout the cooking process and provide a nice sticky chewiness at the end. I then take the pot off the heat and add the Walnuts and Lukewarm Water, slowly stirring with a wooden spoon until the oats have completely soaked up all the water. This really helps get a nice silky and creamy consistency. If you wish to skip these two steps, go for it, again it’s your breakfast and you are the master of your own breakfast!

One last thing, this recipe makes enough porridge for two adults so you can share it with someone special. If you just want to make enough for yourself however, simply half the recipe. I would love to hear how you go with this at home, just head over to the contact page and let us know!

Ingredients

(Mixture)

  • 1 cup of Rolled Oats
  • 1 cup of Oat Milk
  • 1 cup of Lukewarm Water
  • 1 and a half tablespoons of Erbista Garry Gubinge Powder
  • 2 teaspoons of Maple Syrup or Honey
  • 1 quarter of a cup of Raisins or Sultanas
  • 2 teaspoons of Vegetable Oil or Olive Oil
  • (optional: 4 – 6 Walnuts Finely Chopped or Crushed)

(Toppings)

  • Fresh Apple (Cut Into Thin Wedges)
  • Fresh Banana (Sliced)
  • Desiccated Coconut
  • Cinnamon Powder
  • (optional: Maple Syrup or Honey)
  • (optional: Extra Oat Milk)

Method

  1. In a small non-stick pot with one teaspoon of Vegetable Oil or Olive Oil, lightly toast the Rolled Oats on medium-low heat for about 2 minutes while slowly folding them around with a wooden spoon.
  1. Take the pot off the heat and add the Walnuts and Lukewarm Water. Continue the folding action with the wooden spoon until the Oats and Walnuts have soaked up all of the water.
  1. Return the pot to medium-low heat and add the Oat Milk, Maple Syrup (or Honey) and Erbista Garry Gubinge Powder. Stir slowly for about 30 seconds.
  1. Place lid on the pot and minimise stove heat. Leave until the mixture begins to bubble. (This is where you may want to cut up/prepare your toppings like Apple, Banana, Coconut, etc.)
  1. After the mixture has started to bubble, remove the lid and add the Raisins (or Sultanas). Begin to stir the mixture more vigorously until the liquid reduces and you achieve a smooth consistency. This may take between 30 – 90 seconds depending on your pot shape and stove heat.
  1. Take the pot off the heat and add another teaspoon of Vegetable Oil or Olive Oil and mix it in for an extra silky texture.
  1. Pour the contents of the pot into your favourite bowl and add your toppings:
  • Maple Syrup or Honey
  • Extra Milk (if you like)
  • Fresh Banana
  • Fresh Apple Slices
  • Desiccated Coconut
  • Cinnamon Powder
  1. Enjoy your oatmeal!
